Know Yourself: The Nature Of Self-Knowledge

What does it mean to know yourself? What is this "self" which we speak of? Various cultures have made worthwhile contributions to the interpretation of the Delphic oracle's command. These include the Greek, Chinese and Indian cultures, among others. But the imperative to "Know Yourself" is a very pregnant phrase. Have we grasped its full significance?

Your self is certainly reflected in your actions, characteristics, and decisions. But this constitutes only a partial reflection, and not a complete revelation, of the self.

More than any kind of conceptual knowledge, the way to self-knowledge involves a journey of self-discovery.
