The Subtleties Of Relationships: excerpts

"Relationships are replete with subtleties as a matter of nature. Subtleties are as natural to relationships as the air we breathe is to our lungs. The events which transpire between people range from verbal to non-verbal to unconscious phenomena. It would be unthinkable to expect otherwise. But subtleties can be healthy or unhealthy, good or bad for a relationship.

How do we distinguish between the different types of subtleties? Can they be detected and diagnosed in a relationship? And what happens when a subtlety descends to the level of the unconscious?

Relationships, be they with parent, child, friend, lover, spouse or otherwise, may be considered from a variety of perspectives. For example, consider in a relationship the condition of love, or the degrees of love, or the degrees of freedom, or the dynamics of control, or the natural harmony between the sexes, or the power of language in a relationship. These different perspectives are treated in separate articles. In this article I want to focus on the nature of unconscious communication—a very particular type of subtlety, how it comes about, and what its consequences might be."
